Definition

A receipt paper roll is the thermal paper strip loaded into a receipt printer to produce customer and register receipts.

Background & relevance for restaurant operators

Receipt paper rolls are standardised. In hospitality, 80 mm width by 80 mm outer diameter (80/80) is the most common size. Note: many inexpensive thermal rolls contain Bisphenol A (BPA) or BPS — both substances are a health risk through skin contact. BPA-free rolls meet food-contact requirements. In Germany, BPA-free rolls have been required for POS receipts since 2020 (§ 22k ChemVerbotsV). A roll's yield depends on print density: at 150–200 receipts per day, an 80/80 roll lasts about 7–10 days. Correct storage (dark, dry, below 35 °C) extends the thermal coating's shelf life to 3–5 years.
